So Much for Cheap State Schools

Due to the ineptitude of our state politicians, and their inability to get anything done, California's state universities are now more expensive than, and as expensive,as Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and a plethora of other private universities, at least for middle-class students. Why? Because the private schools can afford to provide financial aid. People complain about rising prices for college, but it's not as bad as it looks, at least for private universities and colleges. Unless you're making a large amount of money, and can afford to pay it anyways. Stanford tuition: about 57,000 dollars. But should one be from a family making under 200,000 a year, it's about 25,000; state universities cost about 24,000 for a middle-class family. But "middle-class" is defined as "making under 80,000 dollars a year," or under 140,000 for Berkeley students.

For the Universities of California, and the California State Universities (two different systems), tuition has DOUBLED since 2007. California, a state that used to be able to give its students a nearly free education. And the universities themselves would love to offer cheaper education; but they can't. Why not? Because the politicians in our state Congress, and the national one, can't get their acts together.

You should write your senator/representative. Just a short email that basically tells them to stop the partisan shit and actually get something done. For once.

  1. yes but legislation is being passed around to cancel a tax cut for out of state corporations to help cut UC college fees for middle class families by 66 percent. So our Congress is trying to make things better.

    1. Indeed, but whether it will be passed is unknown. I also believe that Congress will need a 2/3 majority to pass this, because it is technically a tax increase.
